Bacon Doughnut Burger recipe

burgnut? doughger?

Leave it to sexy soul singer Luther Vandross to come up with the ultimate in over-indulgence. Elvis, your fried peanut butter and bacon sandwich has nothin’ on this.

For Fathers’ Day, here’s what most people usually make: hot dogs, beans, burgers served on normal buns (I shudder at the thought). Imagine how excited Dad will be when he experiences the crazy salt/sweet intensity of the bacon doughnut burger.

It’s certainly not good for you. In fact, if you have high cholesterol, for the love of God, stop reading now. But it’s unquestionably tasty and popping up all over the place, from a tiny doughnut shop in Massachusetts to the Food Network (Paula Deen created one for the “ladies” with an egg on top).

Here is the original recipe: glazed doughnut, hamburger patty, cheese and bacon. For a truly authentic experience, use a Krispy Kreme.

Bacon Doughnut Burgers

  • 1¼ pounds ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder or onion powder (or whatever seasoning you prefer)
  • salt and pepper
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 8 bacon slices
  • 4 glazed doughnuts, sliced in half horizontally

Mix beef with egg and garlic powder, and season lightly with salt and pepper. Form into 4 patties. Cover and refrigerate for about 1 hour. Meanwhile, fire up the grill.

Place burgers on grate and grill until meat is to desired level of doneness. Top each burger with a slice of cheese during the last minute so the cheese will melt. Remove from grill, and let burgers rest 2 to 3 minutes to reabsorb the juices.

Meanwhile, fry bacon in skillet, place on paper towels when done, and pat off grease. Leave about 1 tablespoon of bacon grease in skillet. Place doughnut halves in skillet and fry over medium heat until slightly toasty. Alternatively, place doughnut halves on grill over low heat until toasty.

Place patties on doughnut halves, top each with two bacon slices and remaining doughnut halves.

Makes 4

I simply must say, that just looks and sounds delicious! I will make that this weekend. It sounds awfully decadent and daring.

Word of caution:

As good as it looks it's a heart attack waiting to happen. Don't do it! Or at least indulge only once.

There's NO WAY I'm letting my dad eat this. But I will!!!

OMG!

I can't think of a man alive who wouldn't think he was in heaven eating this! lol

I will fix one for my husband, tho because I know it won't hurt either his cholesterol or his heart. Thank God!

And I'll have one too. This looks sooooo delicious!

After all, this is what life is all about when you get to be our age.

Eating what you like. lol

That looks absolutely disgusting....never in a million years!

these are reffered to as "lutherburgers" after luther vandross

additionally you should invert the donut halves so the sticky side is pointing inward. keeps hands clean

I think that I will pass on this one. Very interesting though...lol.

THANK YOU, KATE, for being the voice of reason. I can't believe anyone would look at that and think, "what a great idea!"
ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!

*light bulb goes on in head*

for the cholesterol impaired, not so daring, nibbler, trendy foodie: what about...bacon doughnut sliders? krispy kreme makes doughnut holes, could they be utilized as mini-buns? or are they too mini? just as thought. serve these babies up as appetizers! boom.

Margaret: Genius! Love this idea.

I heard Paula Deen interviewed about this, and she said that there is one catch to this treat: You are only allowed to eat one per lifetime.
I agree that it sounds gross, but I still want to have a bite to see for myself.

Think I'm going to have to agree with Kate and Heather on this one. Sounds absolutely disgusting!

Maybe the police will like it too, lol. I will definately try it this weekend. "-)

I'm with Amanda Kate and Heather, it's completely disgusting!! I don't think I'd combine that in the same day...

You people are crazy. Maybe from a woman's point of view it looks disgusting, but I would eat that in a second. I'm sending this to my wife immediately.

I'm a woman and I think it sounds awesome! Probably not something people should eat every day, but every once in a while, heck yeah! Kind of like Cinnabon -- I know it's terrible for me, but I'll let myself have it once or twice a year.

With all do respect to Luther -- if this is a Luther burger, and Luther battled with weight and health issues and died at a young age ...uhmmmm, hmmmm, geez, (scratching my head) is it just me, or is this a recipe to not only indulge in the Luther burger but to end up dead just like Luther. Something seems unlawful about this concoction!!

How can someone post a recipe like that and have a free conscience? I think it sounds disgusting and sums up all that is wrong with the current percentage of obesity in this country. What are you guys thinking???

for pete's sake -- make one with ground turkey, turkey bacon, cut it like a round cake and let everyone have a bite and you're done with that part of a great time!

Amen, plainsjane. :)
