Reader Kathy asks, "I'm having an ice cream tasting party for an ice cream company to sample and review some new flavors. I would like to serve some other food but am not sure what would be best. Any suggestions?"

Well, Kathy, are you a good witch or a bad witch? That will determine whether you treat your guests to light, healthful snacks to offset the rich ice cream or break out a decadent spread.

Bad witches can play up the old-fashioned appeal of ice cream parties:

  • Serve soda fountain favorites like club sandwiches, BLTs and tuna melts.
  • For smaller, trendier bites, go for grilled cheese triangles paired with shot glasses of tomato soup and paper cones filled with fries and onion rings.
  • Pair your munchies with a sundae-style bar of dipping sauces -- mayo, mustard, ketchup and andalouse sauce are a good start.
  • To drink, serve New York egg creams, root beer floats, cherry-lime rickeys and malteds.

Good witches can give guests a break from the heavy stuff with veggies and grains:

  • Crudites with a lowfat dip (using yogurt or lowfat sour cream as the base) are great for munching.
  • For a bigger meal, stay away from heavier items like meat and mayo in favor of hearty fare like green salad topped with veggies, tofu, grilled tuna or chicken, and dressed in a vinaigrette.
  • Grains like couscous, quinoa and farro are also a good basis for a filling meal that isn't too heavy, leaving you lots of room for all the ice cream you can handle.
  • Sparkling water, coffee and an assortment of teas round out the beverages.
