let them drink cake!

what? omg! yes...yes, I WILL drink you!

I receive press releases all the livelong day. They tend to be either:

A.    Boring
B.    Interesting but irrelevant to my line of work
C.    Preposterous
D.    Awesome

A press release featuring a martini that tastes like wedding cake struck me as a solid C. How could three ingredients result in liquid cake? This needed some hard-hitting investigation…. So I tried the cocktail for myself. The result? Cake — and a resounding D for awesome.

For this drink, the sugared rim simulates icing, while the cocktail is reminiscent of a white cake with fruity notes. It’s perfect for a bridal shower, wedding, anniversary or Valentine’s Day date (especially if it’s a V-Day/proposal combo). Also, with only one liquor and two mixers involved, it’s easy on the wallet, a major bonus during a major recession.

Here’s the recipe, courtesy Hilton Americas-Houston.

Wedding Cake Martini

  • 2 ounces vanilla vodka
  • 2 ounces pineapple juice
  • 2 ounces sweet and sour mix

Combine in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain and pour into a raw sugar-rimmed martini glass.

Serves 1

Note: Avoid using the supercheap, neon-looking sweet and sour mix. It creates a less-balanced, less cake-like cocktail.
