we like big (and little) bundts

the bundt puns truly kick bundt

Is it just us or are Bundt cakes popping more frequently than they used to? I was blown away by a slice of marble Bundt cake with a generous drizzle of chocolate ganache at one holiday party. Then last weekend while strolling down one of my favorite LA streets, I stumbled upon a bakery that sells nothing but Bundt cakes. It got us thinking that Bundt cakes just might be the new cupcakes.

You can find a slew of bakeware to make Bundt cakes in all shapes and sizes. We're betting on the adorable miniature Bundt cakes being particularly popular as somewhat of an inverse to the cupcake. Because Bundt cakes tend to be topped with thinner glazes, they're great for people who like less frosting on their cakes. While we're all for the cupcakes with the super-thick layer of decadent frosting, there's something to be said for the cake being the spotlight of the dessert. And then there's my favorite reason for picking a Bundt cake over a cupcake: No paper liner to contend with!

So if you're planning on bringing cupcakes to an upcoming party, give baby Bundts a try instead. A few months from now when Bundt cakes are all the rage, your friends will always remember you as the trendsetter.

NordicWare makes some awesome pans, including a bunch of decorative mini Bundts, and they're heavy, good quality bakeware, so they'll actually last instead of getting all warped and rusted like the cupcake pans you get at the grocery store. I bake a lot and always buy pans with no nonstick coating (I find on most pans it flakes eventually, and what's IN that stuff??), but with designs this intricate you probably need the coating even with greasing and flouring. And in addition to Bundts, you can use 'em for muffins, ice cream molds, even fancy Jell-O shapes if you're rockin' the retro dessert. http://www.amazon.com/NordicWare-56337-Cast-Aluminum-Floral-Mini-Cake/dp/B0001LFUTY/ref=pd_sim_k_2

I just went to a new year's eve party where the hostess served us mini vanilla bundt cakes with a champagne glaze. They were so cute and delicious! Not as dry as cupcakes can be.
