a back (way back) to school themed halloween party

Have you seen the websites like this one, where people find a cringeworthy old picture from when they were young and then try to re-create the outfit and pose in a new picture? I think it’s a hysterical idea and a great theme for a unique Halloween party.

Invite everyone to turn back the clock with you this October 31 by finding an old school photo of themselves — the more embarrassing the better. (I shudder at the Charles Nelson Reilly collared shirts and old-man leisure suit jackets my mom somehow thought I looked dashing in. Was I going to school or to tape a block of Match Game episodes?) Your guests' job is to best match the outfit and hairstyle and show up to your party.

Your homework is to further enhance the time-machine feel with your party decorations and activities. Find out how after the jump.

• Have school year-themed snacks and refreshments. Tater tots are easy, cheap and delicious to whip up. And juice boxes are built-in fun. If you look hard enough, you can even find wine in individual juice-box form.

• For all your other munchies, like chips, popcorn, and assorted candies, offer your guests brown paper lunchbags to use instead of plates.

• Start a good-natured slam book for people to playfully diss each other’s outfits.

• Have plenty of golden oldie tunes at the ready, depending on what era the bulk of your guests are from. Who wouldn’t be up for rocking out to New Edition’s “Candy Girl” or Lisa Lisa’s “Head to Toe”? And who knows? You might just get a kiss if Spandau Ballet’s “True” comes on.

• Play some school age-themed games: Spin the bottle. Seven minutes in heaven. Even Duck Duck Goose could be fun after a couple of drinks. Live it up!

• And finally, take a group “class” picture early on in the evening, as well as near the end. It will be fun to compare the two depending on how many “juice” boxes everyone has had.

What a fun idea! Thanks for sharing it; I'll print it and keep it for next year!

that site is great! i do declare, growing up in the 90s, it would be challenging for me to find a cross colours bodysuit that still fits. lol! and yes, i did see those wine juice boxes at target. they have something like 4 or 5 varietals!

Genius!
