Anyone else spend more time cuddled up on the couch with classic sitcom reruns on Lifetime than with a real-life honey? Well, a fellow terminally single friend of mine and I once came up with a great sitcom-themed party that maximizes everyone’s chances of meeting that certain someone special. We like to think it’s got the appeal and numbers of a speed dating event — just a little less structured ... and minus the humility.
I humbly submit to you the Will & Grace Mix and Matchmaker Event. Read on to find out how to channel your own Will Truman or Grace Adler, all while helping yourself and your friends out in your respective searches for your perfect couch potato companions.
The party is simple and fun. So even if you and your guests don’t find your happily-ever-afters, the eclectic guest list is sure to create a lively atmosphere and an interesting evening. I do suggest, though, that you invite as many people as possible to get the full effect of the dynamic.
Rule one: Each gay male invitee has to bring along a straight male friend.
Rule two: Each straight male invitee has to bring along a platonic female friend.
Rule three: Each straight female invitee has to bring along a gay male friend.
Rule four: To balance out the statistics of the guest list, you have to invite one extra gay man (who doesn’t need to bring a required guest of his own). This levels the playing field so everyone has the same number of potential new mates.
Bonus: If people don’t meet their love match, they still have the opportunity to spin off and make new friends. Wills can find their Jacks (or other Wills, for that matter). Graces can find their Karens. Heck, someone might even find their own Stan or Rosario. Either way, having your invited guests handpick who they bring will greatly cut down on the number of clunkers and rejects you run the risk of dealing with at other dating events.
For refreshments, the booze of choice dictates itself: “Just Jacks” and Coke. (Or, just Jack, if you like your liquor ... er, straight up.)
Feeling a bit more fruity? Put your own twist on the Classic Walker recipe, and rename it the Classic Karen Walker: Put two slices of lime and some ice into an old-fashioned glass. Add 2 ounces of Perrier (to coax out the lime flavor), and then top off with 2 ounces of Johnnie Walker Black and an ounce of lime juice.
Once everyone’s sufficiently liquored up, break out into groups of Will & Grace’s favorite party game: Charades!
