this one's for my peeps

thank you, easter bunny. BWAK! BWAK!

Marshmallow PEEPS®. No longer content with being just squishy, sugary Easter treats, they've taken bold steps toward world domination.

According to the official PEEPS website, there are more than 200 unofficial sites. And according to my online research, some of them are kooky and fairly awesome.

  • The Thrift Shop Romantic shows how to make a PEEPS garland.
  • Rhino Records uses them to reenact rock-and-roll history.
  • Cook with PEEPS (in a non-Soylent Green kind of way). At Terri's Peep Hut, you'll find recipes including Peep Waldorf Salad, Peepuccino, Rice Krispy Peeps and the classy-sounding Peep Ambrosia.
  • Some twisted people have conducted PEEP research on how they respond to extreme conditions, like heat, cold and, uhm, microwaves.
  • Which, of course, brings us to ... PEEPS jousting.

Hey-- glad you found the Peep Project fun, too. Thanks for including my work! You might also enjoy the Peep Carousel that was done this year: http://thriftshopromantic.blogspot.com/2008/03/crafting-mashmallow-peeps-carousel.html

What IS it about those cute little marshmallows that makes us want to craft?

I may be a lone wolf on this topic, but I actually like stale peeps better than the ones that are seemingly hot off the conveyor belt. That's why I buy them at Easter time, open the package, and then wait until September before eating them. I know it sounds absurd, but that's seriously the best way to enjoy a Peep.

i also love stale peeps. they are so much better. i think i have some xmas peeps in my cabinet, as a matter of fact!

I don't like the taste of peeps, but they sure are cute...and quite entertaining in the microwave.

Wow, Peeps jousting--hilarious! For actual eating, I will take Cadbury Eggs (a childhood fave I still love today) and my new favorite, Cadbury Mini Eggs (which are totally different from Cadbury Eggs, mind you--they're filling-less little milk chocolate eggs with this candy coating and an almost burnt caramel taste that is SO...GOOOOOOOD!), over Peeps any day.

I think this stale peeps preference is more widespread than you think. I remember that my college roommates would always keeps their boxes of peeps open so they would get stale and crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Like Elizabeth, I'd take a Cadbury egg over peeps any day.

The toothpick jousting was truly a riot. Those poor little peeps.

However, I do think decoration and entertainment are the best use for them as they are not very good to eat (fresh or stale). Sorry peeps-eaters :(

Great info on Peeps! What makes the eyes indestructible? I think we'll be bringing Peep-krispy treats to Easter dinner this year!
