taking the cake
Oh, Eviters, you amaze me. Today's stroll through blogville turned up a dessert blog called Frosted Garden, where Steph shares her masterful baking and decorating skills. The gorgeous cupcakes above are reason enough to feature her blog here, but get THIS: She designed these cupcakes to match the Evite invitation for this party! (This is the invitation design.) How cool is that?
Head to Frosted Garden for more about these luscious red velvet and milk chocolate cupcakes (and the color-coordinated sugar cookies) as well as her other whimsical, spectacular creations.
My faves so far: The Rubik's Cube cake for an '80s party! A Wii cake and an edible Wii-Mote for her teen brother's birthday! A pink treasure chest cake that would be the hit of a pirate party or any girlie event, and that I really, really want someone to make for me. And be sure not to miss the outrageous turkey-shaped cake that would delight vegetarians (and turkeys) at Thanksgiving.
You rule, Steph! Can't wait to see what you cook up next.

I love these! That happens to be one of my favorite designs on the site as well. True inspiration for my next party. In the past, I've coordinated the menu and place cards with the invite, but this takes it to a whole new level. Not only that, but they look so yummy. Hats off to Steph!

If you can't get a Wii at least you can eat one?! I saw on Steph's blog that she's a vegetarian and was wondering if she (or anyone else in the blogosphere) has any tips for vegetarian brands for gelatin and marshmallows, which I think were used in this recipe?

Stephanie,
I honestly don't make or use vegetarian/vegan marshmallows to make my fondant unless it is requested. I know, the shame! I'm not a super strict vegetarian. We still eat fish, we just don't eat red meat, poultry or pork. And for us, it's more for dietary reasons than anything else.
Anyway, I wanted to let you know that you can substitute agar agar for gelatin in the typical marshmallow recipe. Agar agar can usually be found at most health food stores. I've bought it at Central Market and Whole Foods before as well. To read up on it a little more, check out their website at www.agar.com.
Hope that helps a little!
FYI: You want to substitute 2 tablespoons of agar agar for every 4 packets of gelatin that you would typically use. (and you have to heat the agar agar in the syrupy liquid you make to start your marshmallows, for at least 3-5 minutes)

The Wii and Rubik's Cube cakes are awesome! And the turkey cake made me wonder if I was more hungry for turkey and stuffing, or dessert.
Although I have to admit, after reading the comments I'm totally confused over which Stephanie is which! :)
