make your own Shamrock Shakes

After a tortuous hiatus last year, my local Mickey D’s came to their senses and decided to bring back the Shamrock Shake, just in time for St. Paddy’s Day. But for some of us, access to this minty, frosty delight for a limited time only is simply not good enough. Plus, the Shamrock Shake could strangely and suddenly disappear again, and could you live with that?
Not to fear, Shamrock Shake-lovers, here’s a recipe to enjoy at home. Full disclosure: This tastes a little like mint-chip ice cream, another thing I lived for as a kid. This version is extra thick; to thin it out, just add more milk.
Shamrock Shake
- 3 cups vanilla ice cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- ¼ teaspoon peppermint extract
- 10 drops green food coloring
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
Serves 2.

I've never actually had a shamrock shake. Every year I always mean to, but then they're usually gone by the time I think about it.

Gotta love the Shamrock shake!

If it tastes like mint chip, why not use mint chip ice cream? It would probably save money on buying separate ingredients. There's also peppermint ice cream around during December, but that's pink not green.

Thanks for posting the recipe.
I enjoy making them for my kids every year, sadly you can't count on any of my local
Mc'Donalds to have a working shake machine or
Shamrock shakes every March.
My kids think it is pretty magical to have green shakes- worth putting the four ingredients in the blender, plus I have them on hand normally anyhow.

What kind of alcohol could you put in this, to give it a kick?

Hmmm, how about peppermint schnapps or creme de menthe. Or if you don't have anywhere to be the next morning, spike it with rumplemints.

Vanilla Vodka, would give it a nice little kick !

A little Creme de Menthe would give this some punch, too.

The Shamrock Shakes @ McDondals are good too but when you make your own, you can add your specialty favorites to the liking of your taste! :-)

I didn't know the shakes were minty, I just thought they were green.

For a nice, Irish kick you can add a couple ounces of Irish whiskey or substitute the peppermint extract with Mint Chocolate Baileys. If you don't like the minty taste you can use the Baileys Original or the Caramel flavored one.
